Levi took a few days off of taking care of Link to hunt elk. He hunted hard and pushed through a lot of terrible brushy canyons with his hunting buddy. On day three he spooked an elk out of its bed in an old growth forest that looked like the Ewok jungle. The lone bull took off running through the woods with Levi running after it and falling behind. Levi pulled out his cow elk call and made the elk think he was a lost cow running through the woods (a trick he learned from a friend)...that made the bull stop and gave Levi a shot, where he quickly anchored the bull. It was a rugged pack out and took two days crawling over blowdowns and brush over our heads. We had some help from a few friends and family and ended up with 300lbs of meat or so (the bull was probably about 700lbs on the hoof. On the day after when we went in just after daylight to pack the rest of the meat out, we barely beat a bear to the kill site. We didn't see him through the brush, but he was crashing around nearby waiting for us to leave. Levi and his hunting buddy had a bear tag, but decided it wasn't worth it to pack a bear out of "the pit." Levi hasn't killed a bull since he was 16, so he was very happy. Although he doesn't hunt elk every year, the odds of killing a bull in the area are 7%.
